Ranchi, May 1 (PTI) The first phase of Census 2027 began in Jharkhand on Friday with the self-enumeration exercise that will allow people to provide their household details digitally, officials said.

Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar urged people to participate in the exercise and provide accurate information.

“I appeal to the people of the state to ensure their active participation in the self-enumeration process for the Census, which began on May 1 and wish for the success of Census 2027 in the state,” he said.

Gangwar said data plays a vital role in formulating policies for development.

“Census provides information about the actual population, houses, family sizes and types, as well as their social and economic status. This data shapes the government’s policy formulation for the development and welfare of the people,” he said.

State Directorate of Census Operations Director Prabhat Kumar said the self-enumeration exercise will continue till May 15.

“Self-enumeration is a simple and convenient process that allows individuals and families to provide their information by visiting the official portal se.census.gov.in,” he told reporters.

Kumar urged everyone to actively participate in this exercise and provide details about their household, housing conditions, and basic amenities.

After the self-enumeration exercise, the housing listing and housing census field operations will begin on May 16 and continue till June 14, he said.

“During this period, enumerators will visit households across the state to collect data directly. Around 76,000 enumerators and supervisors will be deployed across Jharkhand for this purpose,” he added.

Kumar cautioned residents against sharing any OTP with anyone during the exercise and advised them to verify enumerators during house visits.

The first phase of the exercise will cover 33 questions related to the condition of the house, family details, facilities available to the family, and assets owned by them.

“In this phase, we will collect basic information such as materials used in the flooring, walls and roof of the house, ownership status, number of rooms, number of married couples, water and energy sources, toilet access, and fuel used for cooking, among others,” said Satyendra Kumar Gupta, joint director of Directorate of Census Operations.

The second phase of the Census will be carried out from February 9 to February 28 next year, he said.

The population enumeration will provide statistics on various demographic, socio-cultural, and economic parameters of each family member, along with their migration and reproductive characteristics, he said. PTI RPS RPS SOM
