New Delhi, May 6 (PTI) The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India on Wednesday urged all political parties to uphold the Constitution and ensure inclusive governance as new governments take shape following the recent assembly elections.
Congratulating voters and winning candidates in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, the church body said the peaceful conduct of the polls reflected the strength of the democratic process.
“The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) extends its heartfelt congratulations to the people of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry for the successful and peaceful conclusion of their assembly elections. We extend our warmest congratulations to all the political parties and individual candidates who have emerged victorious in this crucial democratic exercise,” the CBCI said in a statement.
“As new state governments take shape, the CBCI earnestly calls upon the newly elected leadership, regardless of their party affiliations, to steadfastly respect and uphold the Constitution of India. We urge the incoming governments to govern with transparency and prioritise inclusive policies,” it said.
It emphasised that whichever party forms government, must dedicate its mandate “preferentially towards the upliftment of the poor, the marginalised, the less advantaged, and minority communities”.
“True nation development is achieved only when the fruits of progress reach the most vulnerable sections of our society,” it said.
It added that the Catholic church in India “firmly reinstates its unwavering commitment to collaborate with the government towards continuous nation-building”.
“Through our educational, medical and social welfare institutions, we remain resolutely dedicated to advancing the collective good, peace and prosperity of all citizens,” it said.
Emphasising this mission, Cardinal Poola Anthony, president of the CBCI, said, “The true measure of a vibrant democracy lies not just in the successful conduct of elections, but in the steadfast commitment of elected leaders to serve the most vulnerable. We urge the new governments to work hand-in-hand with all institutions to build a more just, inclusive, and equitable India.
“May the elected representatives be guided by wisdom, justice, and deep compassion as they embark on this profound journey of public service and governance,” he added. PTI AO PRK
