Kollam (Keralam), Oct 16 (PTI) Police on Friday registered a case against former DGP and BJP councillor R Sreelekha over her remarks against LoP in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at Punalur, officials said.

At a recent party event in Punalur, Sreelekha criticised Gandhi’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and likened his actions to those of a person under the influence of drugs.

Her remarks drew widespread criticism from Congress leaders, including Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala.

A Congress leader filed a complaint with the police on Wednesday, following which a case was registered at Punalur police station, officials said.

The case was registered under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause a riot, they said.

Police said Congress leader K S Sabarinadhan had also filed a similar complaint in Thiruvananthapuram.

However, since the incident took place in Punalur, police decided to register an FIR based on the complaint received in Kollam district, officials said.

As part of the investigation, police will examine video recordings of the event at which Sreelekha made the remarks.

Her detailed statement will also be recorded after the preliminary investigation, officials added.

Sreelekha was the first woman IPS officer from Keralam and retired as DGP before joining the BJP.

She won the local body election from the Sasthamangalam ward of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation last year. However, she lost the Assembly election from the Vatiyoorkavu constituency as a BJP candidate in April this year. PTI TBA SSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
