Ahmedabad, Mar 14 (PTI) The CAA will give citizenship to persecuted minorities from three neighbouring countries and is not meant to take away anyone’s rights, Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi said on Thursday.

Addressing a gathering of people who who had either received citizenship of India or were expected to get it under the newly-enforced CAA, he said the Act was introduced by the Centre to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Buddhists and Zoroastrians of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have come to India seeking refuge following persecution.

At the event in Gandhinagar, Sanghavi was felicitated by Pakistani migrants, who had come to Gujarat many years ago and have settled in the state, for implementing Citizenship Amendment Act, a government release said.

“The Act does not have any provision to take away citizenship of Indian citizens of any religion. The long-cherished dream of these migrants, who came to India after suffering unimaginable torture, to get Indian citizenship has come true,” he said.

“They are celebrating Diwali today. This is the Narendra Modi government’s guarantee of 100 per cent completion of any work. You all are now completely safe in Gujarat. Coordination is being done at the appropriate level under CAA to bring about speedy disposal of various issues related to issuing citizenships,” Sanghavi added.

The gifts and congratulatory letters which were given to him by migrants for the implementation of CAA will be sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi with due respect, the minister informed the gathering.

As per the release, 107 persons who came to India from Pakistan over the past several years and settled in Ahmedabad, Morbi, Rajkot, Mehsana, Kutch and Patan districts attended the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Gujarat Director General of Police Vikas Sahay said the state administration is committed to speedy implementation of CAA and all necessary action is being taken by the police as well. PTI PJT BNM
