Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 28 (PTI) Byelections were held on Monday to 38 local body wards in Keralam amidst criticism from various quarters against the UDF government regarding issues like power cuts, ministers’ foreign junkets and delay in flood relief assistance.
The polling commenced at 7 am and by 6.48 pm, saw an overall turnout of 58.81 per cent, according to State Election Commission (SEC) figures.
The SEC figures at 5.30 pm showed that Kannur had the highest turnout with 82.45 per cent, while Kasaragod, Thrissur and Malappuram saw polling in excess of 70 per cent.
Kozhikode had the lowest turnout with 51.42 per cent, the SEC said.
Bypolls, the first after the UDF won in the assembly polls, were held in 38 local body wards of 12 districts in the state, except Kollam and Alappuzha.
A total of 126 candidates contested in the byelections, seeking the mandate of 3,09,713 voters of whom 1,64,241 are women, 1,45,468 are men and four are transgender, it said.
The highest numbers of candidates — 23 — contested in Palakkad district where bypolls are being held in seven local body wards.
