Guwahati, Sep 13 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the New Delhi Declaration of the BRICS countries, stating that it highlighted a “pragmatic, inclusive and forward-looking leadership” that Indian foreign policy brings to an evolving global order.
The declaration adopted during the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi also welcomed the recent Guwahati Declaration issued by the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies “that would facilitate operational and technical cooperation among BRICS anti-drug agencies”.
“This document (New Delhi Declaration) exemplifies the pragmatic, inclusive and forward-looking leadership that Indian foreign policy brings to an evolving global order,” Sarma said in a social media post on Saturday.
He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the successful adoption of the historic document.
“The declaration is a resounding testament to India’s Chairship, substantive in content and far-reaching in vision.
“From multilateral reform to counter-terrorism, and closer collaboration in new-age technology, agriculture and animal conservation, several critical issues have found consensus among global powers, including the voice of the Global South,” Sarma said.
The CM also expressed satisfaction over the reference to Guwahati in the 45-page New Delhi Declaration.
“The #BRICS Declaration has formally recognised the Guwahati Declaration, adopted by the Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies of BRICS nations, as a key step toward strengthening operational and technical cooperation against narcotics,” he added.
Mentioning the Guwahati Declaration in the New Declaration is an “extremely symbolic and powerful move”, given that Assam sits at a critical narcotics corridor, Sarma asserted.
The Guwahati Declaration adopted in July had underscored the need for timely exchange of information, intelligence and best practices among member countries, in accordance with national laws and international obligations.
The Declaration had also emphasised promoting innovative technologies, digital tools and data-driven approaches to strengthen law enforcement and regulatory efforts against drug trafficking.
India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026 is guided by the overarching theme — ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’ — and it brought together Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia and United Arab Emirates in the two-day meeting of BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies in Guwahati on July 6-7.
