Kolkata, Oct 26 (PTI) Thousands of BJP workers, led by senior party leader and West Bengal minister Tapas Roy, on Monday took out a rally in Kolkata to protest against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Roy demanded an unconditional apology from Kharge and the Congress for “hurting the sentiments of 140 crore Indians”.
Kharge had on Sunday sparked a controversy with his remarks “Modi ka baap bhi jayega”, in response to an audience member’s comment that “the PM would not go anywhere”.
The incident took place while Kharge, who is also Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, was speaking at the programme to celebrate the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister, Shrikrishna Singh.
Roy, the Minister of Commerce and Industries, said the remarks reflect the “taste and culture of those associated with the Congress”.
He said that neither Kharge nor anyone else from the Congress have “expressed regret” over the comments, “which shows their level of frustration as India is marching ahead under Modi”.
The BJP rally started from Victoria House in Esplanade area and covered a distance of around one km, during which the party workers also raised slogans against Kharge. PTI SUS RBT
