New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) The BJP on Sunday rejected as “baseless” Rahul Gandhi’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a “full-scale attack” on Tamil language and culture, and accused the Congress leader of attempting to create a division in the country on linguistic lines.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the reality is that the Tamil language has received “immense respect” during Prime Minister Modi’s tenure.

Under Modi’s leadership, efforts have been made to elevate and establish Tamil language across its various dimensions, not only at the national level but also on the international stage, Trivedi said.

On Saturday, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Modi of launching a “full-scale attack” on Tamil language, culture and history, while also claiming that the delimitation exercise is designed to “punish” Tamil Nadu and reduce its voice in Parliament.

“What we are seeing is a full-scale attack on Tamil culture… On your language, history and traditions,” Gandhi had told a crowd gathered at a ground in Chennai for the sixth edition of his ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ outreach initiative and the first in southern India.

Slamming Gandhi for his remarks on Modi, Trivedi said, “Burning with jealousy and crippled by frustration, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has once again attempted to level baseless, reckless and unfounded allegations against our government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai,” the BJP MP added.

The BJP MP also claimed that Gandhi made these baseless allegations against the prime minister while attempting to plunge India into anarchy and divisiveness.

The Congress leader is trying to create a divide between the North and South on the lines of language, he charged. PTI PK KVK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
