New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) A large number of BJP Mahila Morcha workers protested near the Congress headquarters on DDU Marg in Central Delhi on Thursday, accusing Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of “misbehaving” with female police personnel during the INDIA bloc MPs’ sit-in a day ago.
Police stopped the BJP Mahila Morcha workers as they walked from ITO crossing to the Congress headquarters, while raising slogans against Gandhi, who was detained during a protest on Wednesday and later released. Female Delhi Police personnel formed a human chain to stop the BJP Mahila Morcha protesters as they tried to push forward. The protesters then staged a sit-in when police stopped them near Hindi Bhawan on DDU Marg.
The Mahila Morcha protesters led by Delhi BJP general secretary Yogita Singh accused the LoP of “repeatedly” misbehaving with women police personnel, during Congress’ protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, on Tuesday and Wednesday, over alleged ‘vote chori’.
The BJP accused Gandhi of “inappropriately touching” a female constable and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of “punching” a cop during their street protest, and claimed that the action of the Congress leaders was not consistent with their slogan of “smash the patriarchy”.
The Congress did not immediately respond to the BJP’s charge.
While addressing the protesters, Delhi BJP general secretary said, “There is a place for disagreement in a democracy, but raising hand against women police personnel and insulting them is unacceptable. It is the duty of every citizen to respect the uniform.”
Mahila Morcha in-charge Aarti Mehra said someone who cannot respect the uniform that protects women cannot claim to respect the women of the country.
The Congress party and Gandhi must apologise to the nation, she said.
Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha president Archana Gupta said Gandhi’s “misbehaviour” with women police personnel is “shameful”, demanding the Congress leader to apologise.
State vice president Sarika Jain and MLA Shikha Roy also addressed the protesters.
“Gandhi’s misbehaviour with women police personnel reflects the anti-women mindset of the Congress,” Jain said. PTI VIT VIT ASD
