Coimbatore, Aug 14 (PTI) Hitting out at the Tamil Nadu government for denying permission to hold rallies carrying the national flag ahead of the 80th Independence Day, BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan welcomed on Friday the Madras High Court’s intervention, pointing out the court’s sharp questions regarding the denial.
“The national flag is our pride, our identity. Surprisingly, Vijay’s government’s mindset has changed to the extent of not being able to tolerate even a rally carrying this”. She declared that “the souls of all the martyrs who fought for this freedom will not forgive this government”.
Addressing the media, Srinivasan said, “At a time when the 80th Independence Day is being celebrated across the country, wherever the BJP has asked for permission to conduct a rally carrying the tricolour in Tamil Nadu, the police have denied permission”.
BJP had planned a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ (Tricolour rally) in Coimbatore to commemorate Independence Day. However, the state government denied permission for this rally, citing concerns over the law and order situation. In response to the denial, the BJP approached the Madras High Court to challenge the state’s decision.
Referring to the BJP’s legal recourse, she noted, “Particularly because it was denied in Coimbatore, opposing that, a writ petition was filed in the Chennai High Court, in which the High Court very rightly asked whether Coimbatore is in Pakistan or Afghanistan”.
Shifting her focus to the Congress, the BJP leader condemned Rahul Gandhi for his inappropriate and sexist comment about the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“It is totally condemnable that Rahul Gandhi is playing like an irresponsible political leader,” she said.
The Leader of the Opposition during the Rachnatmak Congress national convention on August 13 criticised PM Modi’s approach to international diplomacy, claiming that the government’s foreign policy essentially revolved around “hugging leaders”.

Srinivasan also hit back at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav over his claims regarding a lack of national progress over the last 12 years.
