BJP gains upper hand in MCD committee polls, wins 5 top posts

New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) The BJP gained an upper hand in the ongoing Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing and Ward Committee elections on Wednesday, winning five of the six top posts decided so far and three seats on the Standing Committee.

The elections for chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of the civic body’s 12 ward committees, besides six Standing Committee seats, are being held on Wednesday and are scheduled to conclude at 4 pm.

The BJP has secured the chairperson’s post in the Najafgarh zone, along with the Standing Committee position from the zone.

In Shahdara North, BJP’s Pankaj Luthra was elected chairperson and Brijesh Singh deputy chairperson. In Rohini, AAP’s Pushpa and Ramesh Chand won the chairperson and deputy chairperson posts, respectively.

The BJP also secured both top positions in Shahdara South, with Yashpal Singh elected chairperson and Raju Sachdeva deputy chairperson and Manish was elected to the Standing Committee.

In Keshavpuram, BJP’s Vineet Vohra and Meenu Goel were elected chairperson and deputy chairperson, respectively, while Sushil secured the Standing Committee seat.

In the South Zone, BJP’s Dharmvir Singh was elected chairperson and Mamta Yadav deputy chairperson.

Reacting to the result from the South Zone, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said on X that the BJP and AAP had 10 councillors each, while the Congress had two.

“Result: BJP got 12 votes, AAP got 10 votes,” Bharadwaj said.

The AAP leader said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should “discuss” the outcome with Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav. The remaining elections are still underway. PTI VBH MSJ VBH SKY SKY
