The 18-member standing committee is headed by a chairperson. Of these 18 members, six are directly elected by the house of 250 councillors and 12 are elected by 12 zonal ward committees.
Earlier in the day, Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the Congress had helped the BJP secure victory in the South Zone ward committee election.
Claiming that the BJP and the AAP had 10 councillors each in the zone while the Congress had two, Bharadwaj said on X that the BJP candidate received 12 votes against the AAP’s 10, and urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to discuss the matter with Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav.
Rejecting Bharadwaj’s allegation, Congress councillor Nazia Danish said Bharadwaj should explain the outcomes in the West and City-SP zones before accusing the Congress over the South Zone results.
“The election of chairpersons in individual ward committees would not alter the overall balance of power in the MCD, where the BJP already enjoys a majority,” she said. PTI VBH MSJ VBH MDO MDO
