New Delhi: The Uttarakhand government is set to bring a bill to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami said Monday. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dhami said the committee formed to prepare the draft of the UCC will submit it to the state government on 2 February, following which a bill in this regard will be tabled in the upcoming session of the state legislature.

Dhami also said his government has always been committed to implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”. The UCC was among the major poll promises of the BJP in Uttarakhand ahead of the 2022 assembly polls.

The Uttarakhand governor has convened a four-day Assembly session from 5 to 8 February.

Dhami said the BJP had resolved to implement the UCC when it went to the people before the 2022 assembly polls. “The people of Uttarakhand blessed us, and gave us the opportunity to come to power,” he said. He added that the five-member committee led by former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, formed in May 2022 to prepare the draft of the UCC, has “finished its work”.

The expert committee was tasked with examining the scope of personal laws and how a Uniform Civil Code might affect them. Other members of the committee included retired Delhi High Court judge Pramod Kohli, former chief secretaries Shatrughan Singh and Manu Gaur and Doon University vice-chancellor Surekha Dangwa.
