Bhagalpur, Sep 11 (PTI) A 55-year-old local BJP leader was allegedly shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Friday, police said.

The incident occurred near a hotel in Thatheri Tola area.

Uma Bhushan Tanti alias Pappu Tanti, the BJP mandal president and a resident of Kutubganj, was returning home on his motorcycle when the unidentified assailants intercepted the vehicle and shot him, SP (City) Atulesh Jha told reporters here.

“He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” Jha said.

Four police teams have been formed to investigate the case from all angles, he said.

Footage from CCTV cameras installed around the crime scene is also being examined, he said.

“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of political enmity. Family members have named certain suspects as well,” the SP said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, Bhagalpur BJP MLA Rohit Pandey, who visited the hospital, demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits. PTI CORR SUK RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
