Bengaluru, Jun 19 (PTI) A mobile snatching incident in the city took a tragic turn after one of the accused collapsed and died while attempting to flee, the scene, while his accomplice was later arrested, police said on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Junaid (18), while his associate, Arbaz (23), was taken into police custody, they said.

The incident occurred in Cubbonpete, near Majestic, at around 5.30 pm on June 15, they said.

A video of the incident, which has now surfaced online, showed the two accused on a scooter allegedly following a man, snatching his mobile phone, and trying to flee.

The victim immediately raised an alarm and ran behind the scooter. In the meantime, an alert pedestrian hurled a sack towards the scooter, causing the rider to lose balance, following which they fell onto the road.

According to police, while attempting to escape, the snatched phone slipped onto the road. Fearing they would be caught, the accused left the scooter behind and managed to run for around 250 metres.

Suddenly, Junaid collapsed next to a bike parked on the roadside and died on the spot. Arbaz was subsequently arrested, a senior police officer said.

During the inquiry, Junaid’s parents told police that he was a cardiac patient and had a stent in his coronary artery, he said.

Police said that while Junaid was a first-time offender, Arbaz was a habitual offender.

On the victim’s complaint, a case of snatching was registered at the Ulsoor Gate police station, police said, adding that another case of unnatural death was registered following Junaid’s death. PTI AMP ROH
