Bengaluru, Jul 28 (PTI) An FIR has been registered after unidentified persons allegedly created a fake website of a state-run guest house here and duped people by collecting online payments for room bookings, police said on Tuesday.
A probe was initiated after a senior manager of the run guest house on Sunday lodged a complaint, alleging that several customers had been deceived into making payments through the bogus portal, they said.
According to the complaint, customers received booking confirmations and invoices generated through the fraudulent website, believing it to be the guest house’s official booking platform.
The scam first came to light when a customer, who lost Rs 11,000 after booking a room through the fake website, approached the Central CEN Crime Police.
During the preliminary investigation, police traced one of the suspects, who allegedly admitted to the fraud and refunded the amount to the victim, a senior police officer said.
However, the victim chose not to lodge a formal complaint, he said.
As similar incidents continued to be reported, the police requested the guest house authorities to file a complaint, following which an FIR was registered on Sunday, police said.
