Kolkata, Apr 24 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday underscored Hindu-Muslim unity while campaigning for TMC candidate Firhad Hakim, stating that he had once donated blood to save the CM’s mother during a medical emergency.
Addressing a rally at Bhu Kailash ground here, Banerjee said Hakim, popularly known as ‘Bobby’, stood by her during difficult times, including after her mother’s death.
Her remarks come amid a fierce political contest in the state, with Banerjee targeting the BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing them of divisive politics, while reiterating her party’s commitment to social harmony in West Bengal.
“My mother needed three bottles of blood during her operation. Bobby told me not to worry. His blood group matched, and he helped save her life. What greater bond can there be than that of blood?” she said.
Highlighting Hakim’s family background, Banerjee said his mother is a Hindu and his father a Muslim, describing it as a reflection of India’s pluralistic ethos.
“This is India. In his veins flows both Hindu and Muslim blood… If a fire breaks out in a house, does it spare the neighbouring house if it belongs to someone of another community?” “I always stand with everyone, irrespective of religion or community. I have never practised narrow politics,” the CM asserted.
Banerjee also appealed to voters across communities to support Hakim in the Kolkata Port assembly constituency, saying leaders like him embody unity and inclusiveness.
