Kolkata, Oct 14 (PTI) The West Bengal government will expand its fleet of environment-friendly compressed natural gas and electric buses as part of efforts to curb pollution, Transport Minister Arjun Singh said.

Singh was speaking at the inauguration of a CNG station at the South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) bus depot in Belgharia on Tuesday.

He said the SBSTC has already inducted around 150 CNG buses, and the number is expected to increase in the coming years.

The newly inaugurated station, jointly set up by the Bengal Gas Corporation Ltd (BGCL) and SBSTC at a cost of Rs 3.24 crore, will supply CNG to government and private vehicles.

It will be connected directly to a gas pipeline, enabling a steady supply of the cleaner fuel, officials said.

On the occasion, Singh emphasised the government’s focus on green energy and increased use of CNG-powered buses.

SBSTC Managing Director Pranab Ghosh and BGCL Chief Executive Officer Anupam Mukhopadhyay were among those present at the inauguration. PTI SUS RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
