Kolkata, Oct 20 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday evening paid a visit to the control room at the health department, and took stock of the situation at various state-run hospitals.

Accompanied by Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee and Health Secretary N S Nigam, Adhikari enquired about the preparedness at the hospitals during the ongoing Durga Puja festivities, a senior official said.

The West Bengal government has also cancelled all leaves for doctors, nurses, health workers and other administrative staff in the wake of the stampede at Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal, which resulted in the death of 19 people.

During the day, Adhikari met the relatives of five of the 19 deceased and handed over Rs 25 lakh ex gratia to each of the grieving families. PTI SCH RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
