Beed (Maharashtra), Aug 23 (PTI) A man allegedly shot at his grandfather, uncle and aunt after they opposed his relationship with his cousin in Maharashtra’s Beed district, police said on Sunday.

The grandfather suffered serious injuries in the incident, which occurred on Friday evening at Khodwa Sawargaon Tanda village in Parli Vaijnath tehsil.

The accused was later apprehended, they said.

According to the police, the accused and his cousin sister had eloped a couple of years ago. A case was registered against him in October 2025.

Following an investigation, the police traced the duo living together and later handed the woman back to her parents in November last year.

She later chose not to return to the accused, and family members counselled both sides that marriage was not permissible since they were first cousins. The woman was then sent to live with her brother in Pune.

Angered by the separation, the accused had previously issued death threats to the family, prompting multiple police complaints.

On Friday, while the woman’s parents and grandfather were sitting outside their home, the accused arrived there with a firearm.

The family rushed inside and locked the door. The enraged youth fired two rounds at the wooden door, shattering it. As his grandfather tried to intervene, a bullet grazed his left eye, causing severe bleeding, a police official said.

The accused then threatened to eliminate the entire family before fleeing.

After being alerted, police rushed to the spot, registered a case and apprehended the accused, the official added. PTI COR GK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
