Beed, Oct 11 (PTI) Three persons allegedly duped a jeweller in Maharashtra’s Beed district of more than Rs 18.15 lakh by selling gold-plated silver ornaments under the guise of genuine scrap gold, police said on Sunday.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim on Saturday, Dharur police registered a case against the trio, including two residents of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, and launched a search using CCTV footage from the locality, an official said.
According to the police, the incident occurred on September 24 when the three accused visited jeweller Madan Dhotre’s store, claiming that they wanted to sell 163 gm of scrap gold.
After gaining Dhotre’s confidence, the trio handed over the ornaments. Believing the valuables to be authentic, the jeweller handed over Rs 17.5 lakh in cash along with silver jewellery worth Rs 65,400, bringing the total transaction value to Rs 18,15,400, the official said.
It was only after the men left that the jeweller realised the ornaments were gold-coated with silver cores, he said, adding that a case has been registered under sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). PTI COR ARU
