Satara, Apr 25 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday claimed that the proposed refinery project at Barsu in Ratnagiri district would be pollution-free, and his predecessor Uddhav Thackeray was in its favour when he was in power.

The project will be executed with people’s consent, he said, speaking to reporters.

“Barsu is a green refinery, and there is an assurance that there will not be any pollution. Then chief minister (Thackeray) had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to set up the refinery in the region so that the area gets developed, locals get employment as investment of thousands of crores of rupees comes there,” Shinde said.

“He (Thackeray) gave a green light to the project. Why did he give a green light then? Was there a special situation then, or was there any sort of compromise that had taken place? What is the reason of opposing the project after losing the chief minister’s post,” Shinde said, without naming Thackeray.

At the moment only soil testing is taking place, and the project will start only after its report confirms that land is suitable for the project, he said.

“We built the (Mumbai-Nagpur) Samruddhi Highway with the consent of the people. Here also, the same thing is going to happen. The project will not be executed forcefully or in an unjust way. We will execute the project with the consent of the people,” the chief minister said. PTI SPK KRK KRK
