New Delhi: Former BJP MP Pragya Thakur has urged the “leader of the country” to make a “permanent arrangement to eliminate cockroaches” from the nation.
In a post on X, Thakur—a key accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case who was acquitted by a special NIA court last year—said that in the past, cockroaches found anywhere were swept away with a broom, but now the “broom” has befriended the cockroaches, and thus filth is spreading across the country.
“The nation’s leader should no longer trust the broom; instead, permanent arrangement must be made to eliminate the cockroaches. Make the country clean,” she wrote.

Thakur has previously courted controversies over her remarks and her latest comments come in the backdrop of massive protests across India, especially in New Delhi, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. Protesters are demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.
The protests are also ongoing at a time when Parliament is in session.
A key figurehead of the protests, activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his hunger strike on the 26th day late Thursday after assurances from the Centre, but the CJP has said it will continue the agitation till Pradhan resigns.
The Modi government has been in a tight spot over the handling of the protests and many within the BJP haven’t reacted to Thakur’s comments.
Wangchuk ended his fast after reaching an understanding with the Centre in which the government promised to address the paper leak issues, proposed fast-track courts and a law for stricter punishment to those involved in paper leaks. It also assured of no legal action against protesting students.
In the 2024 general election, the BJP had denied a Lok Sabha ticket to Thakur.
In the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Thakur had compared Ashok Chakra awardee and Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad chief the late Hemant Karkare with the mythological villains Ravan and Kans.
Karkare was killed in action during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Thakur had alleged that Karkare had falsely implicated her in the 2008 Malegaon blasts and that he “died because she had cursed him”.
