Itanagar, Jul 28 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung on Tuesday asserted that the state government was committed to resolving all pending boundary disputes through regional committees.
Inaugurating a Rs 3-crore fire station at Yupia in Papum Pare district, he said that Assam plays a crucial role in fostering regional harmony, while urging people on both sides of the inter-state border to maintain peace.
Highlighting the recent disturbances along the inter-state boundary in Tarasso area, he said the state government has resolved border disputes in five districts and discussions were underway in the remaining districts.
Besides inaugurating the fire station, Natung also flagged off a fleet of newly inducted vehicles.
The facility has been executed by the Urban Development Department and aims to boost disaster preparedness and emergency response across the district, an official statement said.
Addressing the gathering, the minister said the state government has constructed 13 new fire stations across district headquarters over the last three years.
Additionally, 337 new posts were created in the department during this period, raising the total strength of firefighters in Arunachal Pradesh to 811 personnel.
Natung said the Arunachal Pradesh Police’s anti-narcotics ‘Operation Dawn’ has led to significant crackdowns on drug peddlers and trafficking networks over the last four years.
On July 15, tensions flared along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam inter-state in Sango village in Tarasso area of Papum Pare district following arson and firing incidents between residents and Assam forest personnel, officials said.
The forest personnel from Assam’s Behali Reserve Forest attempted to stop the alleged construction of unauthorised houses in an area claimed by Assam as part of the reserve forest. During the operation, the occupants allegedly opened fire, with nearly 50 rounds reportedly being fired. No injuries were reported in the incident, they said.
The land remains under dispute, with Assam maintaining that it falls within the Behali Reserve Forest, while local residents claim ownership, asserting that families had been living there for long. PTI CORR ACD
