Amaravati, Oct 26 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry Federation (AP Chambers) on Monday appealed to private airlines IndiGo and Air India to introduce direct flights between Vijayawada and Kochi, citing Sabarimala pilgrimage traffic and other needs.

The industry body underscored that during the pilgrimage season from November to January, an estimated three lakh pilgrims travel from Vijayawada to Sabarimala annually.

“AP Chambers has submitted representations to IndiGo and Air India, requesting the introduction of direct flight services between Vijayawada and Kochi,” its president P Bhaskar Rao in a press release.

Direct connectivity to Kochi would provide a convenient travel option for pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it said.

AP Chambers has urged both the airlines to initiate the service at the earliest, with suitable frequency and timings to meet the seasonal demand. It has also requested them to examine the feasibility of year-round operations, considering tourism, healthcare, business travel and other passenger requirements.

The industry body has further highlighted the growing travel needs arising from capital development activities in Amaravati and the potential to strengthen commercial and economic ties between Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

AP Chambers has requested the airlines to expedite their assessment and operational planning so that the proposed services can commence during the forthcoming pilgrimage season itself. PTI STH SA

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
