Anupam Kher quotes Guru Gobind Singh in tweet on Sambit Patra, angers Sikh community

Anupam Kher later deleted the tweet, but not before Punjab Congress leaders called for the BJP to sack Kher's wife Kirron, who is a BJP MP.

New Delhi: Bollywood actor Anupam Kher came under fire on social media for quoting Sikh spiritual leader Guru Gobind Singh to praise BJP leader Sambit Patra in a tweet Wednesday, which has since been deleted.

The line “sava lakh se ek bhida dun” is one of the most famous and sacred Sikh war cries coined by Guru Gobind Singh during the Second War of Chamkaur Sahib against the Mughals in 1705.

Kher tagged BJP national spokesperson Patra after the party leader faced scathing criticism for tweeting the viral photograph of a three-year-old boy sitting on his grandfather’s corpse, who was killed in the crossfire between militants and security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore, with the caption “PULITZER LOVERS??”.

Soon after, Kher faced immense backlash for using the sacred quote and for hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community.

He then deleted the tweet and issued an apology Thursday.

“In one of my previous tweets, I wrote something wrong. I apologise for that,” he said.

Congress attacks Anupam Kher

Several Congress leaders were among those that lashed out at Kher, who is married to BJP MP Kirron Kher, for his ‘insensitive’ tweet.

Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu from Punjab, said, “How dare @AnupamPKher uses sacred words of Guru Gobind Singh ji to describe the spokesperson of BJP. It spoils the martial image of Sikhs. It is a bid of RSS to dilute strong tenets of Sikhism. PM Modi should tender an immediate apology and kick out Kher and his wife from bjp.”

Punjab cabinet minister and Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also called on the Akal Takht Jathedar to intervene in the matter.

Brinder Dhillion, President of the Punjab Youth Congress, also called out Kher for making the objectionable statement — “You should be ashamed ,to prove your loyalty to your bosses you are playing with the sentiments of Sikhs. Equating a liar, a fake drama guy who not only is a hate monger but thoroughly communal and you are equating him with Guru ji sikhs.”

“For the community, the words are the basis of our faith and belief system and such casual usage is a humiliation to every single Sikh. It is not a mistake but an intended move to disrupt communal harmony. Relevant action needs to be taken,” Dhillon reportedly said.

  1. What is so sacred about a war cry? Why should anyone feel hurt? Some class of people are just waiting to “feel hurt”. I didn’t expect sturdy Sardarjis amongst such feeble people.

    • Sacred its written wrongly and addressed to guru gobind singh.I know its for hindus to use namo(shivay) for modi but dont use sikhism in it

  2. Relax people. I am saying it as a Sikh. A normally-worded objection would suffice. No need for typical Indian melodrama.
