Ancestral UP town rejoices as Indian-American Nikhil Goyal wins Vermont senate seat

Stay updated with ThePrint:

Amroha (UP), Nov 5 (PTI) Indian-American Nikhil Goyal has been elected a state senator from the US state of Vermont, triggering celebrations in his ancestral town of Mandi Dhanaura in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district.

Thirty-year-old Goyal, a Democratic Party candidate, secured one of the three seats in the Chittenden Central district in the November 3 US mid-term election.

His cousin Akshat Goyal told PTI on Thursday that although Nikhil was born in the US, his family hailed from Mandi Dhanaura. Several of his extended family still live there, and the townsfolk are delighted and proud that someone from their community has won an election in America, he said.

Akshat said Nikhil rarely visits the town, but he is well known among the residents. His father Vimal Goyal frequently visits Mandi Dhanaura and is expected to arrive next on November 28.

“We are extremely happy about our brother’s achievement. The best part is that he contested an election for the first time and he won it,” Akshat said.

Akshat said Nikhil is academically accomplished and has authored several books. He earned a doctorate at 24. His work, including his books and articles, focuses on reforming the American education system.

Vimal Goyal moved to the US in 1985 for higher education and later settled there. He lives with his wife Divya and children Nikhil and Nikita in New York, where the family runs a hotel business, Akshat said. PTI COR CDN RUK
