Ahmedabad, Jul 22 (PTI) Five-time MLA Amit Chavda on Tuesday took charge as the new Gujarat unit president of the Congress, and said the party has resolved to remove the BJP from power in the 2027 assembly polls.
This is Chavda’s second term as the president of the state Congress as he earlier held this position between 2018 and 2021.
Addressing a press conference after assuming the charge of state unit chief, he said the party will approach each and every citizen ahead of the polls and try to take them along by giving various programmes highlighting their plight.
Under the BJP rule, the people of Gujarat are facing a host of issues, such as rampant corruption, illegal mining, high cost of education, bad quality of roads, fixed-pay for government employees and contractual hiring, among others, he said.
“Today, all of us resolved to uproot the BJP government in 2027 and free the people of the state from this autocratic regime which is worse than the British rule,” Chavda said.
“Gujarat’s youth has been suffering since long due to the fixed pay system as well as contractual and outsourcing-based recruitment. Today, we have taken a resolve to remove that system and provide permanent jobs to the youth by filling up vacant government posts,” he said.
All sections of society, be it youth, women or farmers, are suffering under the BJP rule but the government is only interested in its publicity, the Congress leader said.
“Corruption is rampant and people in power are directly linked to it. We took a resolve to uproot such a corrupt regime. Farmers are also suffering due to the BJP government’s policies. We will take the fight to the streets and take people along to bring about a change in 2027,” Chavda said.
Weeks after the sudden exit of Shaktisinh Gohil as the state unit of the Gujarat Congress president, the party had on July 17 appointed Chavda as the new state unit chief.
Senior MLA and former union minister Tushar Chaudhary has been made the Congress Legislature Party leader in the Gujarat assembly, replacing Chavda, who held that post.
Chavda, a prominent OBC leader, represents Anklav seat of Anand district.
He was one of the 16 Congress MLAs who had won the 2022 assembly polls when the BJP bagged 156 seats and retained power. PTI PJT NP
