Lucknow, Oct 12 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court on Monday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to identify and notify industrial, commercial, residential, and silence zones within three months and to curb noise pollution.

A Lucknow bench of Justice Alok Mathur and Justice Amitabh Kumar Rai issued the directions while hearing a suo motu petition concerning noise pollution.

The matter will be heard next on January 15, 2027.

The court also directed the state government to take steps to curb the sale, installation and use of prohibited pressure horns and illegal hooters.

The bench observed that classifying different areas was necessary to ensure compliance with prescribed noise limits under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.

Expressing concern over the indiscriminate use of hooters in private vehicles, the court said their use should be restricted to authorised government vehicles and emergency services, such as ambulances, in accordance with applicable rules.

The court directed authorities to take strict action against those installing or using illegal hooters in private vehicles, and sought a report from the state government on the steps taken in follow-up to its directions. PTI COR KIS VN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
