Ahead of winter, Navi Mumbai civic body warns construction sites over air pollution

Thane, Oct 10 (PTI) ‘Stop work’ and ‘sealing’ action will be taken against construction sites for violating air pollution norms, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) warned on Saturday.

The warning came after NNMC chief Kailas Shinde held a high-level joint meeting with urban planners, executive engineers, architects, builders, and developers to ensure air quality does not deteriorate.

“Pollution severely impacts children, senior citizens, and respiratory patients in winter. Builders must treat environmental responsibility as a social duty rather than just as a business,” Shinde said.

To combat dust and pollution, the civic body has enforced critical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), an official said.

It includes ban on use of drinking water for construction and dust suppression, with violators facing immediate site sealing.

“Sites must also install 30-foot-high barricades, fully wrap buildings in ‘green-net’, and set up ‘tire-washing’ facilities at exits to stop mud from reaching roads. Air quality sensors and public AQI display boards are mandatory at every construction site,” the official said.

Joint departmental inspections are underway, with strict penalties, work stoppages, and heavy fines awaiting violators, Director of Urban Planning Somnath Kekan said. PTI COR BNM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
