New Delhi: India recorded 59,000 new Covid cases Friday, taking the total number of active cases in the country to over four lakh. The test positivity rate also increased to over 5.3 per cent.
Test positivity rate
With an increase in the number of new cases, the test positivity increased to 5.3 per cent in the last 24 hours, the highest since 9 November. While the test positivity is still below the desired 10 per cent, it is now steadily increasing throughout the country.
The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 4.9 per cent.
Among the states which are currently reporting the highest number of Covid-19 cases daily, Maharashtra has the highest test positivity of over 23 per cent. This is particularly worrying because the state also has the highest number of active cases and daily cases.
All other states have positivity below 10 per cent.
Daily Cases
As many as 59,118 people across the country tested positive for Covid-19 Friday. This is the highest number of daily cases since October 17.
Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of new cases every day. Eight other states are reporting over 1,000 new cases every day.
Daily vaccinations
With 23,58,731 doses given in the last 24 hours, a total of 5,55,04,440 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far.
As many as 85,02,968 people have received both doses of the vaccine in India so far.
Active cases
Active cases in India increased to 4,21,066 Friday. This is the first time since December that active cases have crossed 4 lakh.
Number of deaths
India’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 1,60,949 Friday, with 257 deaths reported across the country in the last 24 hours.
Mortality rate
The overall fatality rate for India is 1.36. Punjab’s case fatality reduced to 2.92 — which is still the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.06 while that of Sikkim is 2.17.
The rapid drop in CFR can be attributed to the increase in the percentage of active cases across India.
Daily tests
In the last 24 hours, 11,00,756 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,227 government laboratories and 1,202 private laboratories. Over 23.8 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
Recovered cases
As many as 32,987 patients have been discharged from Covid-19 hospitals across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,12,64,637.
Total cases
As many as 1,18,46,652 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.
States with highest active cases
Maharashtra has 2,64,001 active cases of Covid-19, with 35,952 new cases reported since yesterday.
A total of 26,00,833 people from the state have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Of these, 53,795 people have died, with 111 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
In Kerala, active Covid-19 cases increased to 24,690. Since yesterday, the state reported 1,989 new cases of Covid-19.
This takes the total number of cases detected from the state to 11,11,897 since the beginning of the pandemic. With 12 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,539.
In Punjab, active cases increased to 21,405, with 2,661 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours.
A total of 2,22,937 people in the state have reported to be Covid-19 positive since the beginning of the pandemic. With 43 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 6,517.
Karnataka reported 2,661 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing active cases in the state up to 18,226. A total of 9,78,478 cases have been reported from the state so far.
With 10 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll increased to 12,471.
Chhattisgarh reported 2,419 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases to 13,318. 3,32,113 cases have been detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.
The state reported 15 deaths in the last 24 hours, which takes the Covid-19 death toll to 4,026.
