Ahmedabad, Sep 24 (PTI) People driving on the wrong side of the road would face criminal action for endangering the lives of others, Ahmedabad police commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said on Thursday.
He was speaking to reporters during the ‘Road Safety Bike Rally’ organised by Ahmedabad City Traffic Police under the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’. Participants of the rally urged motorists to follow traffic rules, avoid wrong-side driving and speeding, give way to vehicles taking left turns and ensure their driving does not inconvenience other road users.
“Those who drive on the wrong side not only put their own lives at risk but also endanger the lives of others. We will register a criminal case for negligent conduct against such persons and take whatever legal action is applicable,” he said.
People should not drive on the wrong side, should allow vehicles taking a left turn to pass and should not block their way, he added.
They should not drive in a manner that causes inconvenience to other road users, Gehlot said.
“If an accident occurs, they should act as good Samaritans, immediately take the injured person to a hospital and provide assistance,” he said.
Gehlot urged citizens to follow traffic rules as Ahmedabad is set to host several major international sporting events like Commonwealth Games in 2030.
He said police has identified locations prone to traffic violations and road-related problems through a month-long survey, and authorities are now planning corrective measures in coordination with the municipal corporation.
“During the last month, we conducted several surveys to identify where people are driving on the wrong side, where motorists are not allowing vehicles taking a left turn to pass, where speeding is taking place and at which locations different types of violations are occurring,” Gehlot said.
The police also examined how road engineering could be improved and how deficiencies could be addressed, he said.
A detailed report has been prepared and discussed with Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani and his entire team, he added. PTI KVM BNM
