Mumbai, Sep 2 (PTI) The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday arrested a junior engineer and a worker of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 60,000 from a bakery owner, an official said.
The anti-graft agency also recovered over Rs 2.78 lakh in unaccounted cash from one of the accused during the operation.
The arrested accused were identified as junior engineer Niravkumar Chunilal Jaisur (43) and civic worker Vijay Ramesh Patil (46), both posted at the BMC’s K/West Ward office in Andheri (West).
According to the ACB, the 50-year-old complainant runs a bakery business.
Patil allegedly approached him and demanded a bribe of Rs 70,000 on behalf of himself and Jaisur in exchange for allowing the bakery to operate smoothly and ensuring no administrative action was taken against the establishment, the ACB said.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the businessman approached the Mumbai unit of the ACB and lodged a complaint on Wednesday.
During the verification of the complaint, Patil reiterated the demand for Rs 70,000 and introduced the complainant to his superior officer, Jaisur. Following negotiations, Jaisur agreed to lower the bribe amount and settled on Rs 60,000, police said.
Following the verification, the ACB laid a trap at the K/West Ward office. Patil was caught red-handed while accepting the Rs 60,000 bribe from the complainant. The team then took Jaisur into custody from his office, the official said.
During a subsequent personal search, ACB sleuths recovered Rs 40,820 in cash from Patil and found an additional Rs 2,37,600 stashed in his bag.
Investigators also seized two mobile phones from Jaisur and one from Patil. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway, officials added. PTI ZA NP
