Mangaluru (Karnataka), Oct 14 (PTI) The ABVP will stage a protest in Mangaluru on Thursday, demanding action against a police officer accused of assaulting its activist Niket during a protest at St Agnes College.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, ABVP Karnataka South state joint secretary Suvith Shetty said the organisation would gather in large numbers at Town Hall to demand justice for Niket and the immediate suspension of the police officer concerned.

Shetty alleged that the police assaulted Niket for raising the slogan “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” during the protest at St Agnes College.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad questioned the police department’s practice of requiring protesters to furnish bail bonds and submit undertakings, raising concerns over the conditions imposed on those participating in protests.

“We will fight for justice and continue our efforts until justice is delivered to Niket,” said Shashaank Shetty, ABVP Mangaluru district convenor.

ABVP office-bearers said the proposed protest aimed to ensure accountability for the alleged assault and secure action against the officer concerned. PTI COR GMS SSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
