New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI) Aam Aadmi Party on Monday hit out at the Delhi government over another building collapse in northeast Delhi’s Milan Garden area, alleging that departments are extracting bribes “in the name of inspections”.

AAP Delhi unit President Saurabh Bharadwaj also claimed that the trader community is watching the “moral degradation” of the BJP government.

“Every month there is a tragedy in Delhi, every month (the) chief minister orders a new audit of all buildings of Delhi, then every month huge bribes are extracted in the name of audits and inspections,” Bharadwaj said in a post on X.

He alleged that apart from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Police, two other departments, the fire and revenue departments, are regularly taking bribes from hotels, restaurants, gyms, nursing homes, coaching centres and other commercial buildings.

“Trader community, which was a traditional and loyal supporter base of Jan Sangh and BJP, is quietly watching the moral degradation and blatant corruption under the triple engine and Rekha Gupta government,” Bharadwaj further said.

Two bodies were recovered from the debris of an under-construction house in northeast Delhi’s Milan Garden area on Monday morning, following an overnight rescue operation, officials said.

The building collapse incident occurred within the Harsh Vihar police station limits on Sunday evening.

Police, citing a preliminary inspection, claimed that the ground-floor structure of an old building, which reportedly housed a godown, collapsed along with the first-floor structure built above it.

It comes more than a month after the building collapse in Satya Niketan, where a five-storey building operating as boys’ PG accommodation collapsed, leaving seven people, including five students, dead. PTI SSM KSI

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
