Bengaluru, Sep 3 (PTI) As many as 8,500 seized two, three and four-wheelers that have been lying for years in and around police-station premises across Bengaluru will soon be shifted to designated locations, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said on Thursday.
He said the move would address a long-standing public nuisance and free up valuable space in and around police stations.
“Vehicles seized by the Police Department in connection with various cases have remained parked for years because many of the cases are still pending before courts. Since court proceedings can take several years to conclude, the vehicles could not be disposed of. Over time, many have deteriorated completely and the accumulation has become a major eyesore,” Gowda said.
The vehicles not only occupy valuable space within police station premises but have also spilled over onto adjoining footpaths and roads, causing inconvenience to the public and obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement, he said in a release.
Noting that residents have been demanding for years that these vehicles be either disposed of in accordance with the law or shifted away from busy and densely populated areas, the minister said the issue has now been taken up seriously, and after nearly two months of sustained efforts, a solution has finally been found.
“The Revenue Department has identified and provided land at multiple locations for parking the seized vehicles, enabling them to be moved out of police-station premises and surrounding public spaces,” he added.
Listing the lands reserved/proposed for the purpose, Gowda said the Police Department has been directed to take possession of the land made available by the Revenue Department, level the sites using JCB machinery and put up the required compound walls/fencing.
Once the sites are ready, the Police Department will identify which vehicles are to be shifted to which location. All vehicles are expected to be relocated to the designated sites within the next 15-20 days, he said.
The minister said shifting the vehicles will help free up police station space, improve footpaths and ease traffic movement around affected locations. “It is another small but important step towards improving Bengaluru’s roads, footpaths and public spaces.” PTI KSU KH
