New Delhi: The Delhi Police have arrested six persons and apprehended one minor in the Sunder Nagri case where a Muslim man was tied to a pole and beaten to death in northeast Delhi Tuesday.

The victim’s father Abdul Wajid has said that his son, 26-year-old Isar Ahmed, was killed by a mob because he ate prasad from a Ganpati stall. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East Delhi), Joy Tirkey told ThePrint that there is no “communal angle” in the matter.

“They saw him lurking around and thought him to be a thief. They then tied him to a pole and beat him up,” the DCP said.

The six people arrested include Kamal, who owns a DJ business; Manoj, who runs a tailor shop and Kamal’s brother; Yunus, who works for Kamal as a DJ; Kishan, a tent house labourer; Pappu, who works in a thread factory; and Lucky, who runs a momo stall, said sources. The minor is 17 years old.

Asked if Isar Ahmed had actually eaten something from the stall or stolen anything, the DCP said the case is of “suspicion of theft”.

“All accused have disclosed that at about 5 am Tuesday, they had caught Isar lurking in the area. They thought that he was a thief. They began asking him questions but he was unable to reply properly as he was mentally challenged. They had then tied him up to an electric pole and thrashed him,” DCP Tirkey said, adding that further investigation is in progress.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media where Isar, seen in a green T-shirt and a pair of jeans, being beaten up mercilessly, tied to a pole. According to the police, Isar was brought back home by a neighbour, Aamir, in a rickshaw.

His family found him lying outside their house at around 3 pm. He succumbed to his injuries at around 7 pm.

Earlier, speaking to ThePrint, Isar’s father said that his son wasn’t “mentally challenged” and that he was beaten up for eating the “prasad”.

During the autopsy, the doctors found blunt force injuries all over Isar’s body including back, arms and legs. The cause of death is shock and haemorrhage, said sources.
