New Delhi: A recent Bumble survey found that around 44% of Indians do not know what makes a good compliment. Kindness tops the list when it comes to dating priorities. 56% of Indians now prefer kindness over physical attributes as a main priority with 84% respondents agreeing that “giving a compliment is the kindest thing to do.”

Calling it ‘the kindness era’ of the singles, Bumble’s survey also found that 58% of respondents have a hard time receiving compliments while 60% women believe it is the responsibility of men to compliment women.

The data is based on a survey conducted by Censuswide and commissioned by Bumble of 2000 Indian respondents 18+ in June 2023.

For many respondents, kindness can come in the form of giving and receiving compliments with 88% of women responding that it impacts their self-confidence positively but there’s a catch. It is all about receiving the right type of compliment; however, according to the survey, 55% of men who took part in the survey do not know how to compliment a woman besides her physical traits.

What women want: Kind compliments

Beyond physical traits, the top five most appreciated compliments according to women are  about their personalities (61%), values and ethics (58%), knowledge of a particular topic (56%), sense of humour (55%) and hobbies or interests (e.g., dancing, travelling etc.) (53%).

For a majority of respondents (81%), proper compliments propel their interests in their prospective partners.

According to Ruchi Ruuh, Bumble’s Relationship Expert, the best practices when it comes to giving a compliment are to go beyond physical traits and be more thoughtful about what you compliment your prospective partner on and to be respectful.

Moreover, as a part of their Kindness is Sexy campaign, Bumble now has a Compliments section as a part of its app.
