Sultanpur (UP), Jul 3 (PTI) Four alleged thieves, including a Sitapur-based criminal carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, were apprehended after an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district, police said on Friday.
Three of the accused sustained injuries in the exchange of fire and were admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Jaisinghpur for treatment, Additional Superintendent of Police Brajnarayan Singh said.
According to the police, a patrol team in the Jaisinghpur police station area received information around 3 am on Friday that some suspicious persons were moving around in a Jeep Compass near Pidhi toll with the intention of committing thefts.
When the police tried to surround and stop the vehicle, the suspects allegedly opened fire and attempted to flee. The police retaliated and arrested four men — Aniket, Akash, Mithilesh and Ajay alias Anant — the officer said.
The ASP identified the accused as Aniket Chauhan of Narendra Pur village in the Sitapur district, who is wanted in about 52 cases and carries a reward of Rs 50,000; Akash of Bibipur village in Sitapur, who faces 46 cases; Mithilesh Chauhan of Mathuapur village in Sitapur, against whom 26 cases are registered; and Ajay alias Anant Ram of Bibipur Imaliya in Sultanpur, who has 22 cases against him.
The police seized three country-made pistols, 22 live cartridges, around Rs 11 lakh in cash, a Jeep Compass and some jewellery from their possession, Singh said.
During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to carrying out thefts in several neighbouring districts over a long period and said they had come to the area with the intention of committing another theft when they were intercepted by the police, he added. PTI COR KIS MNK MNK
