Budaun (UP), Oct 12 (PTI) Three cousins were killed and their friend, who was recently selected for the Agniveer scheme, was seriously injured when a speeding school van hit their motorcycle in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district on Monday, police said.

The accident occurred near Madanjudi village in the Bisauli Kotwali area around 2.30 pm, when the four friends were travelling on a single motorcycle towards Bisauli town, officials said.

The deceased were identified as Nikhil alias Nitin, 19, Rohan, 20, and Rishabh, 18. Injured, Shiva, 18, was admitted to the district hospital, they said.

The four were reportedly travelling to Bisauli to get medicines for Shiva, who had recently been selected under the Agniveer recruitment scheme.

According to the police, the motorcycle was hit by a school bus belonging to Devaraha Baba Memorial. The impact was severe, leaving the motorcycle badly damaged. None of the four riders was wearing a helmet, eyewitnesses said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Hirdesh Kumar Katheria said three youths, who were related to each other, died in the collision, while another sustained serious injuries.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and efforts are underway to trace the van driver, police said. PTI COR KIS SHS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
