Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 15 (PTI) As many as 2,936 people were booked for drunk driving during a statewide special enforcement drive conducted between July 8 and 13 as part of efforts to improve road safety, Kerala police said on Wednesday.
The week-long campaign, titled ‘Drive Sober – Stay Alive’, was carried out under the leadership of the Traffic and Road Safety Management wing of the Kerala Police.
A total of 67,979 vehicles were inspected during the drive, and recommendations have been made to cancel the driving licences of 662 offenders, an official statement said.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a major cause of road accidents and fatalities and poses a serious threat to all road users, the police said.
The police have directed highway patrol units to continue intensified checks in the coming days and initiate stringent action against repeat offenders.
The special drive was conducted under the direction of the Inspector General of Traffic and Road Safety Management, with the supervision of Traffic Zonal Superintendents of Police and the active participation of district traffic nodal officers and traffic enforcement units.
The police also urged the public to report traffic violations through the ‘Shubhayatra’ WhatsApp number (9747001099) by sharing photographs, audio or video clips along with details such as the location, date, time and vehicle registration number. PTI LGK KH
