Lucknow (UP), Jul 2(PTI) A 24-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by his friends after being lured to a birthday party in the New Shanti Nagar area of Ghaziabad, police said on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Mohit Sharma, a resident of New Shanti Nagar. Police said the accused friends, Gaurav and Dev, have been detained for questioning.
According to his family, some of his friends took him from his house around 11 pm on Wednesday on the pretext of attending a birthday party. During the gathering, three youths allegedly surrounded him and repeatedly stabbed him. He suffered three stab wounds to the chest and four to the abdomen.
Police said they reached the spot after receiving a call around 3.30 am on Thursday and took the victim to a MMG Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The victim’s elder brother, Manish, alleged that Mohit had a dispute with Gaurav and Dev around 20 days ago. During the altercation, Mohit had allegedly slapped Gaurav, following which the accused had threatened him with consequences.
Although the matter was later settled, the family alleged the accused nursed a grudge and carried out the attack when they got the opportunity.
The killing triggered protests by the victim’s relatives and local residents, who blocked a road demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The blockade was lifted after police officials assured them that strict action would be taken.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Priyashree Pal said the preliminary investigation indicated that Mohit had a dispute earlier with some of his friends. On Wednesday night, an argument allegedly broke out again during the party after an exchange of abuses while the group was under the influence of alcohol, leading to the stabbing.
She said a case was being registered under relevant sections based on the family’s complaint. The accused have been detained for questioning and further legal proceedings are underway. PTI CDN AMJ AMJ
