New Delhi: Navdeep Singh, the 2017 National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) topper, allegedly died by suicide in Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC).

Navdeep was found dead Sunday morning by his friends after his father Gopal Singh alerted them that he wasn’t responding to any calls from the family, according to the police.

“Around 7 am, the suicide incident was reported from Maulana Azad Medical College. When he wasn’t picking calls, his father sent a friend to check on him who found the door locked from inside. The door was broken open and it was found that prima facie deceased died by suicide,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) M. Harsha Vardhan said.

No suicide note was been found, the police said.

“It remains unclear why he took the extreme step. He was faring well in his academics. His father alerted the friends when he stopped answering phone calls. He was found hanging in his room,” a source in the Delhi Police said.

The family was handed over the body Sunday evening after autopsy and the cremation took place in his native place in Muktsar.

Sources in the Delhi Police said that the 25-year-old was pursuing a Doctor of Medicine in Radiology from MAMC after he completed MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery).

The 25-year-old had bagged the All India Rank 1 in the 2017 National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test and took admission at the Maulana Azad Medical College. Singh reportedly scored 88 percent in his Class 12 board examination.

“With a very heavy heart, we mourn the untimely and tragic demise of our beloved post- graduate resident Dr. Navdeep Singh of batch 2023, Department of Radio-diagnosis, MAMC. His presence will be profoundly missed, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” the Resident Doctors’ Association said in a press release.
