Kota, Sep 18 (PTI) Two women on whom cesarean section was performed at the District Women’s Hospital in Rajasthan’s Bundi have died at separate private facilities in Kota, officials said on Friday.
Following the deaths, the authorities sealed the operation theatre at the Bundi hospital for sampling, sterilisation and culture testing, while a female gynaecologist of the facility has been relieved from her current duties awaiting posting order (APO), they said.
The condition of two other women with the same status worsened at the Bundi hospital on Thursday, forcing the authorities to refer them to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Kota.
Ten other women with high-risk pregnancies are presently admitted to the Bundi hospital for delivery, the officials said.
Kavita Kumawat (32) from Tonk district and Varsha Sain (28) from Bundi district were admitted to the District Women’s Hospital on Tuesday. They underwent C-Section on Wednesday and delivered babies.
However, while the babies were reported to be in good health, the condition of the two women started deteriorating shortly after their surgery, leading to their referral to GMC Kota.
From GMC, their family members shifted them to separate private hospitals in Kota, where they died during treatment late Wednesday afternoon.
Two other patients from Bundi district, Jeenet (20) and Pinky (23), faced similar complications at the Bundi hospital on Thursday and were referred to GMC Kota, where their condition was stated to be stable on Friday.
L N Meena, principal medical officer (PMO) at the Bundi hospital, confirmed that Chandresh Meena, who performed the C-Section on Kavita and Varsha, has been placed under APO.
A three-member inquiry committee headed by the Bundi SDM and comprising the chief medical and health officer and the head of gynaecology at the hospital has been formed to probe the matter, the PMO said.
To prevent potential hospital-acquired infections or surgical complications, the operation theatre has been sealed for at least two days to facilitate sampling and infection control procedures.
PMO Meena said 10 high-risk pregnant women are currently admitted to the Bundi hospital, and if emergency C-Section is required during the shutdown period, arrangements will be made to use the general operation theatre or refer the patients to Kota.
The family members of Kavita and Varsha have demanded an impartial investigation into the deaths, strict action against those responsible, and Rs 50 lakh as compensation in each case. PTI COR ARI
