Mumbai: At least four people were killed and 32 injured after a bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed in Pune’s Talegaon Dabhade area Sunday afternoon. Of the injured, six are in critical condition.

A total of six people have been rescued so far.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said rescue operations are underway on a war footing, adding that several people may have been swept away.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragedy. I offer heartfelt tributes to those who lost their lives. The NDRF has been deployed, and rescue efforts are ongoing,” he said to the media.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, also Pune’s guardian minister, said to media persons that initial information suggests the bridge was in poor condition. Many tourists were reportedly on it at the time, some with motorcycles.

“This could have led to the collapse of the bridge,” said Pawar.

The government has ordered a structural audit of all old and dilapidated bridges across the state.

According to police sources, they estimate that 10 to 15 people could have been swept away in the river.

The incident took place near Kundamala, a tourist spot about 30 km from Pune.

ThePrint reached the NDRF team via calls for more details. This report will be updated if and when a response is received.
