(Eds: With latest inputs) Malda (WB), Apr 25 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was found dead in West Bengal’s Malda district on Tuesday, police said.

The body of the girl, a class 10 student, was found in a field in Ujirpur village in Akandaberia in Kaliachak police station area, they said.

The girl left her home in Nababganj on Monday evening after stealing money from her sister. A few hours later, she called her family and said that she would return home the next morning, police said.

“Her body was found by locals at a field in the morning,” a police officer said.

“We have sent the body for post-mortem examination to ascertain whether she was sexually assaulted. A bag was found from the spot,” the police officer said.

The girl’s father is a vegetable seller, locals said, adding that the family can somehow make ends meet.

Alleging that the girl was raped and murdered, the BJP demonstrated in Old Malda, blocking the state highway at Manglabari Bulbuli More for some time. A large police force brought the situation under control after a brief scuffle over burning tyres on the road.

Police said they were investigating the case from all angles.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) sought a report from the police on the case within 24 hours after BJP MLA Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhary filed a complaint, alleging that the girl was raped and murdered.

The body was found amid violent protests in neighbouring Uttar Dinajpur district over the death of a 17-year-old girl under similar circumstances. The girl was found floating in a canal in Kaliaganj on Friday with her family alleging that she was raped and murdered. PTI SCH CORR SOM SOM
