Kolkata, Jul 29 (PTI) Police have seized around 15 kg of gold and Rs 5.5 crore in cash during a raid at the hideout of a suspected sand mafia in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Wednesday.

Adhikari said the raid was carried out at a premises in the Mohammad Bazar police station following source-based intelligence.

He identified the sand mafia as Tullu Mondal, alias Mohd Nazibuddin, and said cash counting was still underway.

“Commendable job by our law enforcement personnel for the crackdown on sand mafia,” Adhikari said in a social media post, adding that the operation had led to the recovery of a large quantity of illegally amassed wealth.

Reiterating his government’s commitment to act against corruption and organised crime, the CM said the state would continue its drive with a “zero tolerance policy against corruption”.

“Let it be unequivocally clear: no person with a chequered past who has amassed wealth through the exploitation of public resources and hobnobbing with the then ruling political party will be spared,” he said.

Adhikari asserted that those involved in looting public resources would face the full force of the law and that the crackdown on mafia syndicates would continue.

He also commended the DGP, the Birbhum SP and district police personnel for the success of the operation. PTI AMR SOM
