144 MLAs take oath on first day of swearing-in at Bengal Assembly

Kolkata, May 13 (PTI) Altogether 144 MLAs took oath on the first day of the swearing-in ceremony at the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday.

Protem Speaker Tapas Roy said the remaining 146 newly elected legislators would take the oath on May 14 (Thursday).

“Today, 150 MLAs were scheduled to take oath, but six did not turn up citing various reasons,” Roy told reporters.

MLAs from 12 districts, including nine districts of north Bengal and Murshidabad, took oath.

Legislators-elect from Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum are scheduled to take oath on Thursday in addition to the MLAs who could not make it on Wednesday.
