New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) A 13-year-old boy weighing around 186 kg underwent bariatric surgery at a Delhi hospital after suffering from severe obesity and related health problems, including sleep apnea, breathlessness and joint pain, doctors said.

The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy was performed on August 13 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital by a team led by Dr Tarun Mittal, consultant, Department of Laparoscopic, Laser and General Surgery.

The boy had experienced progressive weight gain despite dietary restrictions and lifestyle modifications. He was suffering from breathlessness, joint pain, backache, increased snoring, disturbed sleep and sleep apnea, besides anger-related behavioural issues, according to the hospital.

The child also has a strong family history of obesity, with both his parents having struggled with obesity and subsequently undergoing bariatric surgery, the hospital said.

Following a comprehensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team, bariatric surgery was considered as part of his overall management.

Since the procedure, the boy has lost more than 20 kg, with his family reporting improvements in breathing, snoring, sleep quality, mobility and joint discomfort, doctors said.

His weight is expected to continue reducing over the next 12 to 18 months, with the long-term outcome depending on adherence to dietary recommendations, physical activity, nutritional support and regular medical follow-up, they said.

The hospital said bariatric surgery in children and adolescents requires careful patient selection, comprehensive medical and nutritional evaluation, parental or guardian involvement and long-term multidisciplinary follow-up.

The boy will continue to be monitored by the surgical, paediatrics and chest medicine teams, it said. PTI SGV APL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
