Shimla, Aug 31 (PTI) A 12-member mountaineering team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police embarked on an expedition to scale Mount Reo Purgyil in Himachal Pradesh on Monday, officials said.
The expedition, led by Deputy Commandant Vinod Kumar under the Parvat Sankalp-2026, was flagged off by Manu Maharaj, Inspector General (North Sector), Dehradun, from the ITBP Regional Headquarters in Shimla.
The team will attempt to scale the Mount Reo Purgyil peak, located at an altitude of around 22,175 feet in the Shipki La sub-sector of Kinnaur district.
During the flag-off ceremony, IG Maharaj interacted with the mountaineers, took stock of their preparations and wished them success in carrying out the mission under challenging Himalayan conditions.
“It is not just a mountaineering exercise for the ITBP. For personnel deployed in extremely high-altitude areas along the China border, mountaineering training serves as an important means of testing their physical endurance, mental strength, discipline, leadership and teamwork under adverse conditions,” Maharaj said.
“Such expeditions also provide the personnel with practical experience of operating in snowbound areas, glaciers, steep rocky terrain and low-oxygen environments,” he said.
The objective of the Mount Reo Purgyil expedition, the IG said, was to equip officers and personnel in effectively operating in the challenging conditions of high-altitude Himalayan regions and to foster greater interest and enthusiasm in mountaineering and adventure activities.
ITBP Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ravi Kumar too extended his best wishes to the team. He pointed out that the force has a long-standing and proud tradition of mountaineering expeditions across the Himalayan peaks. PTI COR RUK RUK
